Cholesterol: Understanding Your Numbers

LDL, HDL, and triglycerides tell different parts of the story. Learn why your overall risk matters.

Reading the different results

LDL cholesterol can contribute to plaque buildup in arteries. HDL helps transport cholesterol to the liver. Triglycerides are another type of blood fat. These results should be considered together rather than judging heart health from one number.

Your goals are personal

There is no single LDL goal for everyone. Your clinician considers factors such as age, family history, blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and previous heart or vascular disease. HDL alone does not determine your overall risk or treatment plan.

Making a plan together

Food choices, physical activity, and avoiding tobacco can support heart health. Some people also need medication. Review your results with your clinician to agree on realistic changes, a treatment approach, and when to repeat testing.
